In-House dvelopment of a Microsoft Learning Gateway using Sharepoint Server 2007
Area: Learning and Teaching / Online learning environment / intranet development
school: Eggbuckland Community College
location: Plymouth, SW1 region

Strength

We had, just like many schools, lots of disparate systems, for example Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Management Information System (MIS), Learning Resources, Lesson Plans, Schemes of Work and much more.  All of these systems needed to be accessed in a unique way and required separate usernames and passwords to access them.  A high level of knowledge was also needed in order to know where to look for a particular piece of information.

Our vision was to create a central personalised location which wasn’t restricted to college opening times, where information could be created, shared, found easily and ultimately reduce workload.  Essentially this technology is a Learning Platform or as we call it a Learning Gateway.

We were introduced SharePoint Server 2007 from Microsoft, very quickly we realised this could be a powerful solution to our problems.  SharePoint would provide us with a portal framework which we could develop and build upon, linking together many of our systems such as CMIS, Exchange OWA, My Docs, Moodle, Sharepoint Learning Kit.  We had already invested in a Microsoft solution for our network infrastructure along with a common office application (Office 2007).  It made sense to develop a portal which added value to the technologies we already had in place.

Service

We are able to provide advice and assistance to schools who are looking to setup something similar in their own school.

Delivery

We can provide visits to the school where you can see the scheme in operation or happy to discuss our experiences over the telephone or email.
