Identifying and addressing whole school training needs
Area: Strategic / Professional development and training
school: Horndean Infant School
location: Horndean, SC region

Strength
At Horndean Infant School the professional development of staff is a high priority. We ensure that all staff have opportunities to develop both their own ICT skills and their use of ICT for teaching and learning. This has been achieved in various ways:

  • The Headteacher is a member of Becta's Leading Leader group and can offer support to schools with their Self Review Framework (SRF)
  • When new ICT initatives are introduced i.e. learning platforms questionnaires are used to identify training needs for all staff, including LSAs and parents.
  • To meet these training needs the ICT Leader and other subject leaders lead INSETs to cover any areas that were identified as areas for development. Individual staff support is given to those who require it. Workshops were also run to support parents immediately following the launch of the learning platform.
  • To ensure this training continues teaching staff are given time in staff meetings to share ideas that have been a success in their classroom. This sharing culture means that staff feel confident to ask colleagues for advice and support.
  • Several LSAs have attended ICT courses to improve their understanding and confidence.
  • The Foundation Stage leader attends a Sharing Professional Expertise cluster for the early years, which often discusses ICT.
  • The ICT Leader attends cluster meetings and contributes to this forum and regulary shares good practice and new initiatives i.e. pupil self assessment booklets.
