Hawes Side Primary School |
Hawes Side is a large Primary School in the South of Blackpool. Originally built in 1937, it has been extended and modernised significantly so that it now accommodates 550 children in 19 classes, taught by 24 teachers. In addition, there are two halls, a good-sized library and a fully equipped ICT Suite.
Although appearing small from Pedders Lane, the premises open up to reveal a school of significant size with standing in the local community to match. The extensive grounds, which are mainly at the rear of the school, include three playgrounds and a very large playing field.
The teaching staff is talented and experienced. They always put the needs of the children, whether they be educational, personal or social, as their first and most important priority. They employ a range of teaching styles and techniques to enable the children to achieve the highest possible standards in all subjects. We are at the forefront of technological advancements and ICT innovation is a core element of school development. We believe that education extends beyond the academic to the development of the whole child into a capable and confident individual, ready and able to take a place in society.
Our core aim is to provide children with the skills, knowledge, attitudes and confidence which are necessary to enable them to make informed choices for themselves. In following carefully sequenced and planned programmes of work in all subjects, the children experience a wide range of learning opportunities that are intended to develop them academically and personally.
Parents are encouraged to take an active role in the school. They are invited to support teachers through such activities as hearing children read or assisting them on the computers. Each Tuesday morning parents are invited in to hear their children read and this has been a particularly successful initiative. Parents are also invited to discuss their children’s progress with the class teacher on a regular basis. There is an active Parents, Teachers and Friends Association that organises many events to raise additional funds for the school and also for social reasons. The association regularly contributes several thousand pounds per year to the school.
In addition to the P.T.F.A. we have a Home School Group which consists of a full range of stakeholders. This group meets half termly to discuss a range of school issues.
We have 2 ‘out of school’ childcare clubs to provide childcare for children of working parents. The Breakfast Club runs from 08.00 a.m. to 08.50 a.m. and the After School Club from 3.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. We also run a holiday club in the school holidays.
