Horndean Infant School

School description:

Horndean Infant School is a County Infant School situated in East Hampshire. At the school ICT is embedded into everyday teaching and learning. Every classroom is equipped with a laptop, interactive whiteboard and 3 networked PCs. This allows the teacher and children to use ICT on a very regular basis to enhance the teaching and learning where appropriate. ICT activities are not restricted to the use of computers and interactive whiteboards; at Horndean Infant School you will also see children using digital voice recorders, cameras, microscopes, 'Flip' cameras, floor robots, 'Storyphones' and speech buttons in a variety of subjects. We also have 30 portable netbooks on a trolley which enables children to access ICT in a whole class setting.  The school has an award winning Learning Platform and currently holds a variety of workshops to ensure parents feel confident and are involved with their child's learning.

We have been involved in the competition trial of Buzzwebz, a programme which allows children to create a website.  To trial the software 12 year 2 children worked together to create an International website about our 9 classes.  The software was well designed for young children as once they had been shown the children could easily edit their pages with little support. Subsequently the children won the competition and the school was awarded with computer vouchers, a site licence for the Buzzwebz software and certificates. http://horndeaninfants.buzzwebz.com/buzz/site/projectView.aspx?project_sid=7079430

The impact of ICT is evaluated at all levels through work sampling, classroom observations and year group evaluation. We are developing the use of children’s skills audit interviews so we can include the children’s views in our evaluation of ICT. This evaluation of ICT is fed back to the ICT leader who regularly amends the ICT curriculum to ensure it reflects new resources. ICT activities further enhance the learning in other subjects. All subject leaders have the responsibility of keeping up to date with ICT innovations and developments in their subject.

The school initailly achieved the NAACE mark award and then subsequently the ICT Mark and has gone on to achieve a 2nd ICT Mark. It recently won the Becta ICT Excellence Award  for the Best Whole School, South East Region.
