Parental Engagement and Online Reporting - Introduction

On 25th October 2005, the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) published the Schools White Paper "Higher Standards, Better Schools for All - More Choice for Parents and Students". This White Paper placed parents firmly at the centre of the drive to raise standards by putting an increasing emphasis upon their involvement in the education system.

Underpinning this policy is the central tenet that parental engagement makes a significant difference to the educational outcomes of young people. If there was any doubt, has shown that parental engagement is a decisive factor in determining learner achievement at any age but the younger the children are the more impact this has. However 82% of parents feel left in the dark about their child's day at school.

Parental Engagement of course is a wide-reaching concept, and goes beyond the use of technology, but new technology has a vital role to play in facilitating parents' convenient and timely access to information about their children and their education. Online reporting in particular means parents are able to have secure online access to information on their child’s progress, achievement, attendance and behaviour and it enables parents to get closer to and support their child's learning.

Many ICT Register Schools have expertise in parental engagement and online reporting and are happy to share approaches and good practice. The ICT Register is also working with Becta and the Parental Engagement Team at the SSAT in this area.
