A Great Opportunity to plan ... Beyond Current Horizons
The Beyond Current Horizons, a programme from Futurelab and DCSF, explored ways of planning for the unforeseen future – but as is often the case, the future is already here!  The programme has the aim of helping schools and learning centres plan strategically for the challenges that lie ahead in a changing society, a global economy and the development of technology. Scenarios included global pandemic [remember swine flu?] and school closures [remember snow days?].   [The Beyond Current Horizons website has further information and the resulting report.]

One of the main outcomes from the Beyond Current Horizons programme has been the Vision Mapper Toolkit, designed to support long-term planning in the areas of school and curriculum redesign and providing inspirational ideas and practical materials.

SSAT and Futurelab Workshops

The SSAT and Futurelab have developed a new series of practical workshops based around the Vision Mapper toolkit [above] to provide schools with opportunities to discuss how they can start responding TODAY to those challenges and unforeseen circumstances.  Delegates will ...
  • Explore a range of scenarios facing education  [for example, the merging of working and leisure practices in certain age groups, the ability to work remotely and yet still have access to personal workspaces and personal clouds of information, the rise in use of personal and mobile technologies, the lowering of barriers to data storage … ]
  • Use workshop techniques to start planning the development of resources to start addressing the challenges …
  • Focus on school redesign, curriculum redesign and community services initiatives.

"This is a great opportunity to think about how the school of the future should be, how it should serve children and the local community, and how it might enhance the capacities of staff."   Headteacher, Bristol

Location of the events

12 March – London
26 March – Birmingham
30 March – Leeds

Costs

£199 for affiliated schools and £245 for non-affiliates.  Further information and the booking forms can be found on the SSAT website ...

We hope to see you there for this exciting opportunity!

ICT Excellence Awards - a great opportunity to share good practice!

Now entering their fifth year, Becta’s ICT Excellence Awards provide a great opportunity to not only celebrate the amazing work of schools, local authorities and other supporting organisations but to share the experiences of those at the forefront of the use of technology in learning.

The winners of the 2009 awards were announced at the Bristol ceremony on 19 November and there are examples of truly inspirational work amongst the winners and runners-up.  To mark the beginning of sharing the winners’ great practice, many schools are opening their doors during the first week of February 2010, to showcase what impressed the judges and to give their visitors the chance to see their work for themselves.  For full information about the dates and locations of these open days, please go to the ICT Excellence Awards web pages: http://awards.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?page=2107. There are also films and case studies of each of the winners now available on the website.

And if this work inspires you and you want to share your story or that of a school that you know, the ICT Excellence Awards 2010 are now open for entries.  For more information on the categories and criteria, and to access the online entry forms, go to www.becta.org.uk/excellenceawards.  The deadline for entries is 24 March 2010.
